Clarington, a dynamic lower-tier municipality located within the Regional Municipality of Durham in Ontario, Canada. With a population of 101,427 as of 2021, Clarington has a rich history, dating back to its incorporation in 1973 as the town of Newcastle. The town came into existence through the merging of the town of Bowmanville, the Village of Newcastle, and the townships of Clarke and Darlington, officially becoming Clarington on January 1, 1974.
The name "Clarington" is a creative blend of the names of the two former townships, Darlington and Clarke. Today, the landscape of Clarington showcases a striking contrast, with Darlington primarily comprising suburban areas and Clarke retaining its rural character. Among its communities, Bowmanville stands as the largest and serves as the home of the municipal offices.
As part of the Oshawa census metropolitan area within the eastern end of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Clarington enjoys a strategic location. The municipality boasts diverse economic opportunities, with major employers like the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, General Motors Canada, and various medium to large-sized manufacturing businesses. While many residents commute for work in Durham Region or Toronto, Clarington itself offers a desirable living environment, blending urban amenities with the serenity of rural surroundings.
